Nick J. Sigur, a 17-year-old student at St. Michael's High School, will represent the Crowley Lions Club in the Lions International $50,000 Peace Essay contest.
His winning essay was selected by a panel of three judges, who were Dr. John Bertrand, Judgeand Reggie and 11.1. Mitchell.
A total of $50,000 will be made, including a first prize of $25,000 in educational and-or career-assistance grant, eight semi-finalist awards of $1,000, and travel expenses to Chicago, Ill. in July. At that time, the first prize winner will be selected from the eight. More than 20,000 local, district and multiple district awards will be made.
The contest, which is the largest Peace Essay contest in the world, was initiated to stimulate and elict the views of today's youth on peace.
If Nick Sigur succeeds in District 8-0, his essay will be judged in the multiple district contest, then on the world division level. Judging of the Sigur essay in district 8-0, along with other club winners, will be held at an early date.
