The Acadia Parish Police Jury It its monthly meeting Tuesday in the parish courthouse in Crowey purchased radios for a civil defense emergency communications system in the parish.
The low bid of Motorola Electronics Communication in the amount of $11,148.72 was accepted for the equipment. General Electric submitted the only other bid which was $12,921.99.
The equipment includes eight mobile units and a base station in the courthouse. The mobil( units will be installed in the ward foremen's trucks, and in case of an emergency will be turned over to the parish civil defense. These units are to be delivered in 90 days.
Awarded a contract for servicing the equipment was Ralph Gauthier of Crowley. He submitted the low bid for maintaining the equipment, $70.30 monthly. Motorola also submitted a bid, which was several dollars higher.
Crowley City Judge Edmund Reggie was given his first raise in nearly 10 years by the jury. The judge told the jury that his office will be giving the jury $150 per month from costs funds. The jury added this to the judge's salary bring it from $225 per month to $375.
Elections were scheduled by the jury in three wards of the parish for Feb. 13 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. The wards are Ward three, Ward Four District Five Subroad district seven and Ward Five.
The elections are for road maintenance tax. In Ward One it is for three mills for fiveyears, Ward Four, five mills for five
years; and Ward Five, five mills for five years. The election is to renew these taxes, which are to run out shortly.
The jury approved advertising
for bids for services and meterials to be opened at the January meeting. Bids will be taken on a machine for building bridges, grader blades, lumber, shell and gravel.
The police jury also authorized Secretary - Treasurer M. E.
Kirk to pay a $125 membership fee to the Lovely Louisiana Tourist' Association, while Mrs. J. W. Mitchell was reappointed to the Acadia Parish Welfare Board. The jury permission to various oil companies for pipeline crossings across parish roads.
Kirk read a letter from the Statz Department of Highway, informing the jury that no money ,vas available for resurfacingUS 90 from Crowley to the Mermen-tau. At the last meeting the jury had asked the department to do this work.
