CROWLEY, La. —The major portion of a state docket of 179 eases consisting mainly of traffic violations and non - support of family cases were processed by Judge Edmund M. Reggie in the Crowley City Court Thursday afternoon.
James Aaron Sam of Crowley went to trial on two of three charges, driving while intoxicated and having no driv
ers license. He entered a guilty plea to obstructing a highway. Two state troopers testified they came upon Sam east of Crowley on Highway 90 at night parked in his lane of traffic a n d asleep behind the wheel. They stated he smelled strongly of intoxicants, was unsteady in h i s walk, and could not comprehend instructions or answer questions. Sam
contended he was not intoxicated, had run out of gas, and elected to remain where he was until he could get help.
Judge Reggie ruled the man guilty of DWI and fined him $125 and costs or 30 days in jail. He further fined him $50 and costs or two days in jail for simple obstruction of a highway and said that if t h e jail sentences were elected, they were to run consecutively. He dismissed the drivers license charge.
Following a trial, Euzebe Babineaux of Jennings was found guilty of traveling too f a s t. Troopers testified that Babineaux failed to negotiate a curve in the highway west of Crowley and overturned his car into a water - filled canal. Babineaux- was fined 11141– and- costs or 10 days.
George Harris of Crowley- entered a plea of guilty to driving while his license was under revokation and was sentenced to 20 days in jail.
George Robinson, Jr., was fined $2.5 and costs or 10 days for driving in the wrong lane of traffic and was ordered to the Driver Improvement School.
Two men were ordered arrested for failing to appear after being summoned. They are Joseph Guidry of Rayne, charged with speeding 108 miles per hour in a 70 - mile zone; and Oliver Be r n a r d Sweezy of Crowley charged with trespassing. Inasmuch as Sweezy's case was fixed for trial Thursday, the Judge ordered him to post a $500 bond.
In addition, a total of 4-3 bonds in traffic violation eases were ordered to be forfeited.
