IT'S A NEW YEAR and a good way to start out is by starting something new . . something that you have been asking about for a long time. The requests for a separate ala-cart, just for the girls, have been many and let us assure you that we appreciate your interest. The letters, phone calls and chats that we have had with so many of you ladies throughout the area, asking for

IF THIS IS NOT WHAT YOU HAD IN MIND, please let us hear from you . . . as a matter of fact, if it is what -you wanted, we'd like to know that, too. ft takes courage to t r y to add a single 'thot' to those that you get each week from the experts like Phyllis Perron, Cynthia Cudd and Ethel Biekham, but Jo will add her 2 cents worth with the hope that
you'll remember she lk a ca-
reer gal, not .a home economist. We'll dedicate this first "Food for Thot" to one of our favce rite homemakers in Crowley, since she is one of the f i r st that requested we head in this direction . .-so here's to you, Doris IteMe and all of the we-men m the area who like to collect recipes and ideas. (Remember, fellows, this is just for the girls . . . so turn the page.)

HERE'S A TIP or two for you ... when black socks turn gray from washing, soak them in a basin of very hot water to which a cup of vinegar . h a s been added. This will remove the soap film th at usually causes grayness.
aft4 you rest up lfor a week oti two, you'll feel like making-party plans again, betcha.
DO Y 0 U HAVE a plastic table cover that is beginning to wear out, but was a favorite pattern and you just hate to part with it? Take out y o ur pinking shears and cut it into placemats, following t h e designs of your table cover so that they will be uniform . . . then you can continue to use the placemats fox another few months.'
KEEP IN MIND that the flower for the month of January is the carnation -and the birthstone is the Garnet. Now, this doesn't mean that you will want to give your next door neighbor or your.sister-in law a garnet ring, if her birthday falls in January, but it could mean that you give her a gar- net colored candy dish 'with an appropriate note telling h e
why you chose that color, or a , lovely silk headscarf with car- I nations on it, te'-show that you: remember the flower of h e
birthmonth. -How about tying an artificial carnation into the bow used to seal the package . . . folks like to receive gifts that show thought toward them alone, even if it is a tiny item that cost very little.
NOT MUCH FASHION NEWS for this time, but if you have looked around--'the stores o f Crowley,- you- noticed that the racks and shelves are almost bare of winter clothing and as they put the spring items into display areas, we note that the style for this spring will once more incorporate long lines, belts at hipline, no waists and stark simplicity of trim. Aren't you glad? You can still wear last years dresses, if you have watched your calories during the- holidays. Personally, we hope tile shift is here to stay, forever and ever more . . . it is certainly the most comfortable style of all time.
FOOD FOR THOT . . . you can accomplish anything if you have patience. You can even 'carry water in a sieve if you. wait until it freezes.

HOW ABOUT THIS IDEA . . . lo serve peanuts, cashews, etc. at parties, put them in attractive small pitchers. Then each guest can pick up t h e pitcher, pour a few nuts into his hand without digging into a bowl with his fingers. Pretty good idea, huh? Too late f o r this rears holiday parties, but
