My eyes are really sore this week after seeing the two tough breaks dished out to our basketball squad. Or should I say the last ten tough ,breaks or heart breakers dished our team.
This week's was started the last second, and I do mean second, defeat staged on the Northwestern State College court. The local Bulldogs bounced away in the first minutes of the game to a ripe lead and carried the lead throughout the first period. Then in the waning seconds, fifty-five, to be exact, the Northwestern Demons jumped the victory wagon and rode in on a 39-36 win. And this close score took all of two halves and an extra period to do. The score rested at 30-30 at the close of the regular period. But after the two teams fought furiously and scored little during the extra five minutes, the Bulldogs walked out with nothing but good will, and an ill score-book.
Then came the second heartbreaker. Wednesday on the home court Dutch Reinhardt's cagers were given another defeat, this time a G. I. one. Camp Livingston's five were the underdogs throughout the first period, following the same pattern the Northwesterners cut, but sprung up during the waning minutes of the contest to overtake the Bulldogs and wind up with a 45-42 score. Reinhardt's boys tried every available method of throwing the visiting team out the victory groove, but the dent was cut too deep and the time keeper's whistle blew too soon for them to do much in the way of smoothing the sharp edged lead.
Saturday the local squad will travel to north Louisiana again, this time to meet their canine cousins the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. As yet, the local Bulldogs have not met their "Yankee" relatives, this season. The Tech squad was defeated by the Northwestern Staters twice this season, and both teams by similar scores that Northwestern defeated us. If this means anything, and I think it does, the week-end game should be a real thriller, not that Coach Reinhardt needs any thing like thrills or excitement ... He's seen a lot already.
With a couple of work-outs and little chalk-talk, the local cagers should be "on the ball" Saturday night, because, even if they did lose the last few games, they have lost them by very, very small margins. If the Southwesterners jump the defeat track this week-end, it might mean a lot in salvaging the ,balance of the season.
